COP21 Lecture Highlights Benefits of Sustainability
Manila, Philippines (March 2, 2016) — Mr. James Donovan, ADEC Innovations CEO and Co-Chair of the Environment and Urban Development Committee of the American Chamber of Commerce-Philippines (AmCham Philippines), delivered a lecture on the impact of the 21st Conference of the Parties or Paris Climate Change (COP21) on industry—and how businesses can take advantage of the opportunities it presents. The lecture was held at the AmCham Hall, 2/F Corinthian Plaza Building, Paseo de Roxas, Makati City.
AmCham Philippines' Environment and Urban Development Committee aims to promote sustainable living in communities, as well as to engage businesses towards environmental and social responsibility. Mr. Donovan's lecture zeroed in on the following aspects of the relationship between COP21 and business: the challenges and limitations of COP21; private sector commitments to reduce carbon emissions; existing Philippine laws and regulations on greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction; and standards that can enable businesses to help reduce GHG emissions.
According to Mr. Donovan, COP21 requires all countries to adopt a system of IPCC methods to measure both their GHG emissions and the effectiveness of their mitigation actions. The challenge is to ensure that all countries—both developed and developing—will be fully capable of implementing this new global GHG reporting and review system by 2020. The private sector can help achieve this goal through smart capacity building. These efforts, in turn, will ensure long-term viability for corporate organizations.
